Brighton, Sussex born centre forward Leslie Smith had a brief but explosive football career. He started his career with Redhill in 1929 before joining Second Division club Millwall in the summer of 1930, making his Football League debut against Stoke City in August 1930. In his debut season he scored 4 goals in 9 appearances, but in 1931-32 he was far more prolific, scoring 17 goals in only 23 appearances including a hat-trick in a 4-1 defeat of Preston North End in October 1931 and five other braces of goals. However his career suddenly came to an abrupt halt after playing in an FA Cup tie against First Division Manchester City, a 3-2 home defeat in which he scored, suggesting he suffered a career ending injury after 21 goals in just 32 appearances for The Lions.
