Newburn, Newcastle upon Tyne born right back Norman Smith began his football career with Wedworth Colliery in 1920 and joined Tottenham Hotspur, spending 1921-22 on their books without making a first team appearance. He joined Charlton Athletic, making his Football League debut at Swindon Town in March 1923, and establishing himself in their first team from March 1924. He was a near permanent fixture for The Addicks over the next 12 years, being an ever present in 1925-26 and 1927-28, and helping the club to win the Third Division (South) Championship in 1928-29, when he missed 3 games.
Although they were relegated in 1933, he again helped Charlton to win the Third Division (South) Championship in 1934-35, followed by promotion from the Second Division in 1935-36 as runners up, However he then left the club at the end of the season to join Queen’s Park Rangers, having scored 16 goals, 11 from the penalty spot, in 450 appearances for The Valiants. He played two more seasons at Loftus Road, scoring twice in 71 appearances, before joining Chelsea as a player-coach in the summer of 1939, however the Second World War then intervened.
