Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire born outside left Steve Smith began his football career in 1890 with Cannock Town and played for Rugeley Ceal in 1891 before a move to Hednesford Town a year later. He joined Aston Villa from Hednesford Town in 1893 making his Football League debut that October against Burnley, winning the League Championship in his debut season, scoring twice in 15 games during the campaign. Smith played in 5 League Championship winning teams and also won the FA Cup with Villa in 1895 (although he was not selected for the Cup Final of 1897 which sealed the League and FA Cup double), the same year he won his single England cap against Scotland in April at Goodison Park, scoring in a 3-0 win. He also played twice for The Football League. He made 187 appearances, scoring 42 goals, during Aston Villa’s most dominant period in their history.
In May 1901 after 8 seasons at Villa he joined Portsmouth and played 5 years for them, winning the Southern League Championship in his first season, and scoring 16 goals in 152 appearances before joining Gillingham (then New Brompton) as player-manager in 1906, playing 71 times for New Brompton until his retirement in 1908.
While at Portsmouth he played in the same team as his older brother, Billy, who also played for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
