Description

Hednesford born winger Steve Smith joined Second Division West Ham United from Portsmouth in the summer of 1919, making his Football League debut at Coventry in December 1919, scoring his only goal for West Ham in a resounding 6-0 win over Bury in the FA Cup a month later. He made 31 appearances before joining Charlton Athletic in the summer of 1922 and had 3 seasons at The Valley, scoring 10 goals in 102 appearances before a move to Southend United in the summer of 1925. At Southend he scored 11 goals in 86 appearances over the next 2 seasons, joining Clapton Orient in the close season of 1927. However he only made 7 appearances, scoring once, in a single season in East London, before joining Queen’s Park Rangers in the summer of 1928. He had a single season at Loftus Road, scoring once in 25 appearances before finishing with professional football.

NB in the photograph he stands alongside Charlton goalkeeper Freddie Wood.
