Maryport, Cumbria born outside right Tom Smith began his career with Maryport in 1894 before signing for First Division Preston North End in 1895, making his Football League debut that November against Blackburn Rovers. He played 58 matches and scored on 9 goals until, in 1897, he joined Tottenham Hotspur. While with Tottenham he won the Southern League Championship in 1899-1900 and featured in both matches in the 1901 FA Cup Final victory over Sheffield United, scoring the second Lilywhite’s goal in their Cup winning replay at Burnden Park. After 27 goals in 114 appearances for Spurs he rejoined Preston in 1903 and played a further 8 matches, scoring three more goals. He later played for Carlisle United in 1904 and Workington in 1906 before ending his career with Maryport Tradesmen in 1907.
