Huyton, Lancashire born outside right James Speakman played junior football for Huyton Quarry, Garston North End and Prescot Wireworks before joining First Division Liverpool in February 1909, making his Football League debut against Manchester United in October 1909, one of a pair of appearances made that season, Speakman also playing against Arsenal at Anfield on New Year’s Day 1910.
Very much a fringe player at Anfield used as cover for the dependable Arthur Goddard, he scored his only goal in a 2-0 win for The Reds at Bradford City in April 1912 when making a burst of three appearances in a week, his only outings that season. His final appearance of 8 came in a 2-0 home defeat to Manchester United in March 1913, after which he joined non league South Liverpool in August 1913.
Speakman was the younger brother of full back Sam Speakman, who was also on Liverpool’s books, playing 26 matches for The Reds either side of the First World War.
