James (or perhaps John) Stafford played for Clydebank in the early 1920’s and was involved in a highly controversial incident in August 1922. When due to play an away match against Vale of Leven at Alexandria he failed to appear, and Clydebank played John Swan in his place before Swan was transferred and registered, but impersonating Swan as Stafford on the team sheet. For playing John Swan The Bankies were fined £25 and deducted two points. For the more serious offence of impersonation they were fined £100, and as a result of the points deduction they failed to get promoted (they would have gone up on goal average). They did however get promoted in 1923-24 only to be relegated in 1925. Little else is known of Stafford’s career.
