Newhall, Derbyshire born full back Jonathan Staley began his football career with Derby Midland in 1890, founder members of The Midland League who merged with Football League club Derby County in 1891, with Staley making his Football League debut at Stoke in September 1891. Although a regular first teamer in his debut season for The Rams, he played only sporadically in the following six seasons, not being selected for either of Derby’s losing FA Cup semi final appearances in 1896 and 1897 nor for the 1898 FA Cup Final, which the club lost to local rivals Nottingham Forest.
However in September 1898 he won a permanent berth in the team and was a near ever present as Derby again reached the FA Cup Final, Staley playing as they lost 4-1 to Sheffield United at The Crystal Palace. Having played his last match in a total of 141 appearances against Manchester City in March 1901, Staley joined non league Ripley Athletic in the summer of 1901 before his eventual retirement from playing.
