Thybergh, Yorkshire born centre forward Jackie Stamps began his football career with Silverwood Colliery in 1936 and joined Third Division (South) Mansfield Town in October 1937, for whom he made his Football League debut at Reading the next month, his only appearance for The Stags. He joined New Brighton in August 1938 and scored 6 times in 12 appearances during the first half of 1938-39 before First Division Derby County bought him in January 1939. He scored twice on his Derby County debut in a 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic in March, and by the time the Second World War forced the abandonment of peacetime football in September 1939 he had made 11 appearances for The Rams.
In 1942-43, Stamps made 14 guest appearances for Southampton, scoring 11 goals, but after the War he returned to The Baseball Ground, where he starred in their FA Cup run in 1946, scoring 9 goals in 8 ties including two in the 4-1 victory over Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup Final at Wembley. This is Derby’s only FA Cup triumph. He continued to play for Derby for eight seasons after the War, top scoring for the club in 1949-50 with 29 goals, a haul which included hat-tricks against Birmingham City, Manchester City, Bury and Bolton Wanderers. Stamps was famous for his powerful shot and is a cult figure in Derby County history, with the club’s annual Player of the Year award being named after him.
He joined Shrewsbury Town in December 1953 after 126 goals in 265 appearances, 100 of those exactly in the Football League, the other 26 coming in only 29 FA Cup ties. He had a single season at Gay Meadow, scoring 4 goals in 22 appearances, after which he played for Birmingham League Burton Albion in the 1954-1955 season, signed by manager Reg Weston.
NB in the photograph he stands second from the right with Derby County team mates (l-r) Reg Harrison, Raich Carter, Angus Morrison and Frank Broome.
