Description

Prestwick, Ayrshire born inside left Gilbert Steele began his football career before the First World War with Glenburn Rovers in 1914 and made his senior bow in Scottish League football with Ayr United in 1917. After the War he returned to Glenburn Rovers in 1919 before signing for Third Division (North) club Stockport County in the 1921 close season, for whom he made his Football League debut against Rochdale in October 1921.

He scored 4 times in 15 appearances for The Hatters as they won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1922, but he was allowed to leave and joined Crewe Alexandra over the summer, where he also made his debut against Rochdale, but was soon sidelined, only playing three more matches for Alex that season over the Festive season, scoring both goals in a win over Tranmere Rovers on 30th December.

In 1923-24 Steele had a run of 8 matches between December and January, but in general struggled for first team opportunities, and from March 1924 converted to centre half, playing 7 further matches at half back in the spring of 1925 before being released by Crewe at the season end having scored twice in 24 appearances. His career thereafter is uncertain.
