Whitburn, County Durham born right back William Stephenson began his football career with Jarrow in 1905 and played for Whitburn in 1906 before joining Second Division Hull City in April 1907, making his Football League debut at Lincoln City on Boxing Day the same year. During 3 seasons at Anlaby Road he made 57 appearances before leaving The Tigers to join Tottenham Hotspur in August 1910. He spent a season at White Hart Lane but didn’t make their first eleven, and joined non league County Durham club Wingate Albion in 1911.
Stephenson served as a private with the 17th (Service) Battalion of the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment – The Footballers’ Battalion) during the First World War. Once the War was finished he returned to Hull City in August 1919, and made 9 further first team appearances for The Tigers during 1919-20 before joining Hartlepools United, still a non league club, in June 1920, leaving the club before they joined The Football League the following year.
