Sunderland born right back Tommy Stewart began his football career with Sunderland Royal Rovers in 1903 and joined hometown professional club Sunderland in 1904, making his Football League debut against Nottingham Forest at Roker Park in early January 1905. However he found opportunities limited and after only five appearances he joined Southern League Portsmouth in May 1905, but didn’t settle and after only two appearances returned to Sunderland Royal Rovers later the same year.
He then returned to Football League action when he moved to London joining Second Division Clapton Orient in the summer of 1906, making 54 appearances over two seasons with The O’s before joining Southern League Brighton & Hove Albion in 1908. A season at Brighton was followed by him spending 1909-10 with Brentford, playing 14 times for The Bees before he returned to the north east with non league Wingate Albion in 1910.
