Birtley, County Durham born goalkeeper Ernest Storey began his football career in north east junior football before joining Second Division Hull City in 1908, making his Football League debut at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day the same year, one of three appearances he made for The Tigers that season as understudy to Ed Roughley. He stayed at Anlaby Road during 1909-10 but played no further games before returning to non league football with Spennymoor United, but he returned to Football League action with First Division Bradford City, then reigning FA Cup winners in December 1911, acting as understudy to Mark Mellors and Martin Spendiff, making three first team appearances for The Bantams in March 1912 before returning to the north east to join Blyth Spartans in the 1912 close season. A year later he joined Southern League Swansea Town for £5 in August 1913, and after two seasons at The Vetch Field he returned to Irish League club Belfast Distillery in 1915, where he finished his playing career.
