Pelaw, Gateshead, County Durham born winger Ernie Suggett began his football career with Willington in 1926 and played for Usworth Colliery in 1927 and Crawcrook Albion in 1928 before joining Scottish League Ayr United in 1930. He returned to the north east in March 1931 joining South Shields as a trialist, but didn’t make their first eleven and joined Third Division (North) club Barrow in August 1931, making his Football League debut against Halifax Town in September the same year, scoring in a 3-1 victory at Holker Street. He scored 22 goals in the campaign as Barrow finished a best ever 5th with Suggett the club’s second highest goalscorer behind Billy Millar.
In the summer of 1932 he was signed by Second Division Bradford Park Avenue where he was an ever present in his debut season and scored another 22 goals, this time the total left him as comfortably the club’s leading scorer, and included a hat-trick against Chesterfield in October. “A sprinter on the track, he is a fast and strong runner with resource to beat an opponent; he is also an excellent shot. When the opportunity occurs, Suggett is quick to go inside and has scored many goals by this move”, it was said of him.
His subsequent three seasons at Park Avenue were less prolific, his 11 goals in 1933-34 helping them to 5th place in the Second Division, but (probably through injury) he stopped playing abruptly from September 1935 having scored 43 goals in 111 appearances for Avenue.
