Carluke, Lanarkshire born wing half Tommy Tait began his football career with Cambuslang Rangers in 1898 and joined Scottish League Airdrieonians in 1899, spending four seasons at Broomfield Park before joining Southern League Bristol Rovers in 1903. In 1904-05 he was part of the Rovers’ team that won the Southern League Championship, and in the close season of 1906 he was signed by First Division Sunderland. He made his Football League debut at Newcastle United the same September, and over the next six seasons at Sunderland he scored twice in 196 appearances, being part of teams that twice finished third in the League Championship. While at Sunderland Tait won his one and only cap for Scotland against Wales in a 2-2 draw on at Ninian Park, Cardiff on 6th March 1911.
In 1912 he left Roker Park to join Dundee, but only had a single season with the Dark Blues before joining Wishaw Athletic in 1913. He returned to the north east of England to play non league football for Jarrow later the same year, before a move to Armadale in 1914, where he finished his football career.
He was the father of Tommy Tait (Jr) who played for a variety of clubs including Manchester City, Bolton Wanderers, Luton Town and Reading in the 1920’s and 1930’s.
