Description

Liverpool born goalkeeper Edward Hallows “Ted” Taylor started his football career with Marlborough Old Boys (Liverpool) in 1910 and Liverpool Balmoral in 1911. He also represented Lancashire and County Palatine before joining First Division Oldham Athletic in February 1912, making his Football League debut against Manchester United in April 1913. Initially he was the understudy to Howard Matthews over the three seasons before World War One, making only 10 appearances. He played as a wartime guest for Liverpool and Fulham before resuming with Oldham Athletic after the War, but didn’t dislodge Matthews as first choice until 1921.

In June 1922 Huddersfield Town’s legendary manager Herbert Chapman signed Taylor for £2,500 and in his first season they finished third in the League Championship. Taylor made his England international debut in October 1922 keeping a clean sheet against Ireland at The Hawthorns, winning a total of 8 caps through to March 1926. Taylor won three successive League Championship medals with Huddersfield Town in 1924, 1925 and 1926, playing only 10 games in 1924-25 because of a serious injury and in February 1927, after 129 appearances for Town, he joined Everton making 42 appearances before leaving to join Ashton National in the Cheshire County League in September 1928. In his final season, he joined Wrexham in November 1928, retiring from football at the end of that season, after a final 26 appearances.

His cousin Charlie Hallows played cricket for Lancashire and England.
