Always wearing a short-knotted neck tie, Wolverhampton born goalkeeper Billy Tennant had played rugby for Moseley and began his football career with Willenhall Pickwick in 1881, playing for Hartshill Unity from 1890. Joining First Division Wolverhampton Wanderers for £30 in January 1896 he made his Football League debut at Sheffield United the following month, taking over from regular goalkeeper Billy Rose, and two months later he ended keeping goal for Wolves in the FA Cup Final, which they lost 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday at The Crystal Palace. He was an ever present in 1896-97 but joined Walsall for £75 in June 1897 after 45 appearances for Wolves.
Ever present during his first two seasons at Fellows Park, he missed two matches as Walsall lost their League status at the end of the 1900-01 season, and he left the club to join First Division Grimsby Town in May 1901 after 112 appearances for The Saddlers. At Grimsby he made 13 appearances before being supplanted by Walter Whittaker in December 1901 and he retired from football soon thereafter, briefly becoming The Mariners’ reserve team manager in 1903.
