Pelaw, Gateshead, County Durham born outside right John Thain began his football career with Pelaw after the First World War, from where he was signed by local First Division club Newcastle United in November 1921, making his Football League debut, and only appearance for The Toon, against Aston Villa the following month. Thain moved on to Third Division (South) club Brentford in July 1922, where he didn’t get into their first team until February 1923, scoring on his debut in a 3-0 win over Swindon Town, playing 4 more matches for The Bees before the season end.
In the summer of 1923 Thain joined Southern League club Peterborough & Fletton United but returned to Football League action after a season when he joined Third Division (North) club Grimsby Town along with Peterborough team mate William Burley in May 1924. He scored 4 goals in 26 matches for The Mariners but only stayed a single season at Blundell Park before returning to Peterborough in 1925.
