Description

Redcar born winger Jack Thompson started his football career with South Bankin 1912 before joining Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in 1913, from where he moved to First Division Sheffield United in the summer of 1914, making his Football League debut at Chelsea that September. While he scored 2 goals (against Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United) in 8 appearances, he wasn’t selected for any of United’s FA Cup ties as they went on to win the Final in April 1915, and his career was soon interrupted by the First World War. He resumed his career with Sheffield United after the conflict but remained a fringe player making a further 14 appearances during the first two post war peacetime seasons, before joining Second Division Bristol City in November 1920. He helped them to a third place finish in 1921, scoring once in 27 appearances, the Ashton Gate outfit narrowly missing out on promotion, before losing his place the following season adding only 3 more appearances in February 1922 before he joined non league Bath City in the summer.
