Buckhaven, Fife born inside forward Alec Thomson began his career with Wellesley Juniors before being signed by Glasgow Celtic in October 1922, making his Scottish League debut the next month in a 1-0 victory at Clyde. After a loan spell to Ayr United in 1923, he returned to stake a place in the first team and missed only one game in the League Championship winning season of 1925-26. He was first selected for The Scottish League in a 7-3 victory over The Irish League at The Solitude Ground, Belfast, in a match in which Hughie Gallacher scored five times. He won a further three Scottish League caps over the next 5 years. His first cap for Scotland came in a 1-0 win over England at Old Trafford in April 1926, and he was recalled to the international team in 1932, playing against France in a 3-1 away victory that May and against Wales in a 2-5 defeat at Tynecastle that October.
He also won 4 Scottish Cups with Celtic in 1925, 1927, 1931 and 1933 respectively. In a near 12 year Parkhead career Thomson played a total of 451 games for The Bhoys and scored 98 goals before departing for Dunfermline in June 1934. After Celtic, his talents were appreciated at Dunfermline where he was made captain and was a regular goalscorer, scoring 14 goals in 83 appearances for The Pars before retiring in 1937.
