Dundee born inside right Douglas Thomson began his football career with Dundee Violet in 1911 and had a spell in Canadian football playing for Minnesota and for Winnipeg Scottish in 1912-13, before returning to Scotland where he joined hometown club Dundee Hibernian (now Dundee United) in 1914. After the end of the First World War he joined Southern League club Millwall in 1919, being transferred to Aberdeen for £500 in June 1920. He made his debut for Aberdeen in a 1-1 draw at Dundee that August, where he scored 33 goals in 107 appearances over the next three seasons, having a brief spell on loan at Third Lanark in May 1921.
In May 1923 Thomson was released and joined Third Division (North) club Grimsby Town, making his Football League debut at Tranmere Rovers that August, scoring 4 goals in 29 appearances as The Mariners finished mid table. He left in the summer of 1924, joining Kent League club Dartford before his eventual retirement.
His twin brother Dan Thomson played for Falkirk, Aberdeen, St Johnstone, Bristol City, Bournemouth, Torquay and Walsall.
