Description

Clydebank, Dunbartonshire outside left James (often known as Jamie) Thomson began his football career with Clydebank Juniors and played for Renton in 1912, from where he signed for First Division club Manchester United in 1913, making his Football League debut in a 1-1 draw against Bradford City at Old Trafford that December. Recalled to the first eleven in April, he played 5 further matches for The Red Devils, scoring in the return at Bradford City, which also finished 1-1.

Released, he returned to play for hometown club Dumbarton Harp in 1914 and moved to Clyde in 1916, scoring 6 goals in 25 appearances for The Bully Wee before signing for St Mirren late in December 1918, making his debut against Kilmarnock on New Year’s Day, 1918. He became a stalwart of the club over the next eleven years, scoring 84 goals for The Buddies in 378 appearances before being released in January 1929, when he retired from professional football.

Most notably he was a member of St Mirren’s 1926 Scottish Cup Final team that beat Celtic 2-0 at Hampden Park, in front of 98,000 spectators. Although he didn’t score in the Final, he scored the only goal in the semi final as Rangers were beaten at Parkhead, and a further two goals in earlier rounds. Thomson was awarded his benefit match on 8th October 1924, when Nottingham Forest, with former St Mirren star Duncan Walker in their team, made the trip north. Sam Hardy, one of the greatest ever English goalkeepers, was also part of the Forest side. Despite foul weather, 4,000 spectators still turned up to witness a 1-1 draw.
