Description

Bolton born wing half Elijah “Ernie” Thornborough began his football career with Halliwell United in 1921 before joining First Division Bolton Wanderers, making his Football League debut at Birmingham in November 1925. In his debut season he played 30 games for the first team, including 7 FA Cup ties in the earlier rounds as Bolton progressed to the 1926 FA Cup Final, where they beat Manchester City. However Thornborough didn’t play in either the semi-final or Final. He had four further seasons at Burnden Park but was largely a fringe player, and by the time he joined Second Division Preston North End in 1930 he had made 80 appearances for The Trotters.

At Preston he had to wait until April 1931 to make his first team debut, and played a further 19 times for the club in 1931-32 before joining non league Horwich RMI in the summer of 1932. He moved again to Chorley in 1933 where he played until his retirement.
