Description

Sleaford, Lincolnshire born centre forward Reg Tomlinson began his football career with Horncastle Town in 1934 and joined First Division Grimsby Town in August 1935, making his Football League debut at Wolverhampton Wanderers on 4th March 1936, scoring his first goal for The Mariners 10 days later in a 5-1 defeat at Middlesbrough on his third and final appearance of his debut season. He had another run in the first team from the start of the 1937-38 season but lost his place after the new year and signed for Second Division Southampton in May 1938 having scored 4 times in 22 appearances for Grimsby.

At The Dell he scored 13 times in 37 appearances in the final season before the Second World War, finishing second in the club’s goalscoring chart, and he also played in two of the club’s 1939-40 fixtures before the season was abandoned due to the outbreak of the Second World War, which effectively put an end to his senior career. He joined the Southampton Police in 1940 and his football was restricted to wartime guest appearances, but after the War he was a member of the Southampton Police side that reached two national Police Cup Finals, and also won the Hampshire League Division Two Championship in 1947.
