Norwich, Norfolk born outside left John Tooth began his football career with London side Lucerne and played for Upton Park in 1902 and Yarmouth Town in 1903 from where he joined hometown Southern League club Norwich City the same year. After two years with Norwich he joined First Division club Aston Villa, in September 1905, spending two months on their books without making their first eleven before a move to Second Division club Burton United in November, where he made his Football League debut at Burnley the same month, playing 11 matches for Burton over the course of the rest of the season.
In the 1906 close season he joined Southern League club Coventry City, where he enjoyed two seasons before a return to Football League action with Second Division club Gainsborough Trinity in the summer of 1908. Initially a regular in Trinity’s line up, he missed only two matches in their 1908-09 campaign but probably through injury didn’t play at all during their 1910-11 season, before returning for 3 final matches in the autumn of 1911, by when he had scored twice in 68 matches for Gainsborough. His career thereafter is uncertain.
