Description

Newhall, Derbyshire born goalkeeper Dan Tremelling began his football career with junior club Langwith Junction Wagon Works in 1912, and moved to Midland League Mansfield Town in 1913 before joining Shirebrook in 1914. His career was interrupted by The First World War, during which he kept goal for Lincoln City but at its conclusion he joined Second Division Birmingham in May 1919 making his Football League debut that August against Hull City, being ever present in his debut season. He won the Second Division Championship with Birmingham in 1921 and missed only 3 games in 4 seasons between 1922 and 1926.

His consistency was rewarded with England recognition and he was capped in November 1927 against Wales at Turf Moor, England losing the match 2-1. He also made three appearances for The Football League between October 1926 and September 1928, on each occasion The Irish League providing the opposition. However the emergence of Harry Hibbs proved a significant challenge for Tremelling and in 1929 he lost his first choice status at Birmingham, staying 2 more seasons as Hibbs’ understudy before moving to Bury in 1933 after 395 appearances for The Blues. He stayed 2 seasons at Gigg Lane making 61 appearances before retiring in 1935, returning to Birmingham to become their assistant trainer in July 1936, a position he held until the outbreak of the Second World War.

His younger brother Billy Tremelling also played for Mansfield Town as well as Blackpool and Preston North End, captaining them in the 1937 FA Cup Final.

NB in the photograph, taken during the match with Arsenal at Highbury on 9th December 1922, Tremelling catches the ball watched by Birmingham captain Frank Womack. Birmingham lost the match 1-0.
