Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire born left half Dickie Twiss began his football career with Chorley from where he was signed by First Division club Wolverhampton Wanderers, spending 1932-33 on their books, but he didn’t manage to break through into their first team. From Molineux he moved to Second Division club Port Vale, making his Football League debut, and only appearance for The Valiants playing at centre forward in their match at Hull City in April 1934, before moving on to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in the 1934 close season. His debut for Bournemouth came at inside left against Torquay United that December, again his only appearance of their 1934-35 campaign, and he made 4 further appearances for The Cherries between October 1935 and January 1936, by now having converted to left half, three of these matches being won.
He stayed on as a fringe player at Dean Court throughout the rest of the 1930’s, playing only once more in senior competition when he featured in a Third Division Cup tie at Exeter City in February 1939, and his career was effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, however he is known to have played for Bournemouth in wartime league football, for example featuring at left half in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea in front of 4,000 spectators at Dean Court in December 1939.
