Peterborough born inside forward Dick Upex started his football career with Great Eastern Railways Locomotive Works in Peterborough in 1912 and joined Peterborough City in 1913, from where he signed for Southern League Croydon Common. He promptly scored a hat-trick on his debut for Croydon Common Reserves against Brentford Reserves, and for their first team he scored 14 goals in 28 games before the advent of World War One.
During the First World War he played 4 more wartime matches for Croydon Common and also guested for Clapton Orient. He joined The Footballers’ Battalion and saw action during the War at Vimy Ridge, Loos, Cambrai and Lens.
In April 1919 he signed for Second Division Tottenham Hotspur but made no first team appearances for Tottenham – but played in a friendly against Crystal Palace in April 1919, with former Croydon teammate Dick Allman appearing for Palace. In August 1919 he joined Southern League Southend United, playing a season before joining Charlton Athletic in August 1920. He scored Charlton Athletic’s first ever F.A. Cup hat-trick in a 6-0 home win over Catford Southend on 25th September 1920 having made his Football League debut at Gillingham at the end of the previous month. But he only played twice more for Charlton, once in November at Southampton and in December against Northampton Town, before finishing with professional football.
