Description

Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria born centre half David Walders began his football career with hometown club Barrow in 1901, before joining Second Division Burnley in 1903 along with his brother Jack, making his Football League debut at Chesterfield Town that September. He missed only a handful of games over his 3 seasons at Turf Moor, scoring 6 goals in 97 appearances for The Clarets, before joining Lancashire League Oldham Athletic, again with his brother.

Described in 1907 as “a fine player, Walders knows the art of breaking up an opposing combination and is a capital shot at goal”, Walders captained The Latics in Oldham’s first League season after they joined the Football League in 1907, and helped Oldham to promotion to the top flight in 1909-10 as Second Division runners up. But he lost his regular place in their first team in November 1911 and only featured three more times before joining Southport Central in 1913 after 8 goals in 122 appearances during their League era. During the First World War, he returned to play for Burnley as a wartime guest player.

His younger brother Jack played with him at Barrow, Burnley and Oldham Athletic, and also played for Luton Town and Chorley.
