Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria born centre half Fred Walker began his football career with hometown Lancashire Combination club Barrow, where he was the club captain before joining newly elected Second Division club Leeds City in the summer of 1905, making his Football League debut at Lincoln City at the end of September and making 18 appearances in their inaugural League season. However he fell out of favour at Elland Road and made only 11 further appearances in 1906-07 and none in 1907-08 before joining North Eastern League Huddersfield Town as player manager in August 1908, also playing for them in 1909-10 in the Midland League, retiring from playing at the end of the season. He was still their manager when they were elected to The Football League in 1910, and he oversaw their first 15 games in their inaugural season before handing over to Dick Pudan in November 1910.
