Wednesfield, Staffordshire born centre half George Walker began his football career with Willenhall Pickwick in 1898 before joining First Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1900 close season, making his Football League debut against Bolton Wanderers that September. He had five seasons at Molineux, scoring twice in 132 appearances, before joining Southern League Crystal Palace in the summer of 1905. His first spell with the club lasted only a season, as he joined Southern League rivals New Brompton (now Gillingham) in 1906, but he returned to The Crystal Palace in 1907, spending two further seasons with the club and scoring twice in 76 appearances across his two spells.
He was the father of Billy Walker, one of Aston Villa’s greatest players, England international, and manager of Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest.
