Description

Born in Boldon Colliery, County Durham, outside left George Wall started his career with Boldon Royal Rovers in 1900, and played for Whitburn in 1901 and Jarrow in 1902 before joining Second Division Barnsley in November 1903, making his Football League debut at Leicester Fosse in January 1904. In almost three years with Barnsley, Wall scored 25 goals in 82 games before he transferred to Manchester United in April 1906 for £175. His first hat-trick for United came against Sheffield Wednesday in April 1907, and Wall helped them win the 1908 and 1911 League Championship titles, scoring 22 goals in the 1908 triumph, as well as winning the 1909 FA Cup when they beat Bristol City 1-0 in the Final at Crystal Palace. He also won the FA Charity Shield twice with United in 1908 and 1911. He was first selected for England in March 1907 in a 1-1 draw with Wales at Craven Cottage and he won 6 more caps through to April 1913, his two England goals both coming in a 2-0 win over Scotland in April 1909 at Penge. He also played three times on the FA Tour of South Africa against the South African National team in “test matches”, scoring once, in the summer of 1910. He also played 5 times for The Football League.

He played for Manchester United through to the suspension of peacetime football in 1915 due to the onset of World War One, and during the First World War George Wall served in the Black Watch Regiment. He also played on loan for Cowdenbeath in 1916. After the War he was sold to Oldham Athletic in March 1919 for £200. While at Manchester United he had scored exactly 100 goals in 319 appearances. He then played for two seasons with The Latics, still in the First Division, before travelling north of the border to Hamilton Academical in 1921 after 12 goals in 76 appearances. He returned to England to play for Rochdale a year later in June 1922, scoring once in 31 games, but dropped out of League football in 1923, playing for Ashton National in 1923 and Manchester Ship Canal in 1924. He retired in 1927.
