Cowpen, Northumberland born inside forward Ted Ward started his football career prior to World War One with Blyth Shamrocks in 1912 and Blyth Spartans in 1913 before joining Bedlington United later the same year. After the First World War he again played for Blyth Spartans in 1919 but soon joined First Division Newcastle United in May 1920 making his Football League debut that August against West Bromwich Albion, scoring 5 times in 25 matches for The Toon in his debut season. However he lost his place and didn’t play for the first team again, joining Crystal Palace in June 1922.
He didn’t settle at Selhurst Park and after only 4 first team appearances moved to Nelson in June 1923, where he managed only two appearances. A return to the north east followed with Darlington in November 1924, but again after only 5 appearances he moved on, this time to Ashington in May 1925. His most successful season followed when he bagged 8 goals in 21 games for them in 1925-26 including 2 on his debut in a 3-3 draw against Wigan Borough, but after 10 goals in 26 games he joined non league Workington in 1927. He returned to West Stanley in 1927 and had a spell at Carlisle United in 1929-30 without making their first eleven, before returning once again to Blyth Spartans in 1930 before retirement.
