Description

The middle of three footballing brothers all of whom played for Notts County among others, Radford, Nottinghamshire born outside right Isaac “Ike” Waterall started his football career with junior clubs Radford Woodhouse and played for Heanor United in 1905 before joining First Division club Notts County for the first time in 1906, where he made his Football League debut in a First Division match at Middlesbrough that November. He made just 6 appearances for County that season before joining Midland League club Doncaster Rovers in 1907 and later the same year he played for Rotherham County.

However he returned to Notts County in 1909, becoming a first team regular from March 1910, missing only three matches in 1910-11 and a single match in 1911-12. After County’s relegation in 1912-13 he only featured 7 times in their 1913-14 Second Division Championship winning team, but he regained his regular first team place in September 1914 in the final season of peacetime football before the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915.

After the War he returned to play for The Magpies and was again a first team regular, however when they were relegated from the First Division in 1920, Waterall left the club after a further 185 appearances, in which he’d scored 13 times, and joined new Football League entrant Millwall, playing in their inaugural League fixture, a 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers in the Third Division in August 1920. His single season at The Den saw 3 goals in 26 appearances before he joined Southern League club Ebbw Vale in 1921, where they were Welsh Section Champions in 1921-22, before his retirement.

His older brother Tommy and younger brother Albert were both successful footballers over many seasons in their own rights. Tommy played for Notts County, Bradford Park Avenue, Mansfield, Leicester, Watford and Gillingham. Albert played for Notts County, Stockport County where he spent 13 years and was club captain, Queen’s Park Rangers and Clapton Orient.

NB This photograph was most likely taken prior to the First World War although it was published in 1920.
