Originally an outside left, Swinton, Yorkshire born left back George Waterfield began his career playing with Swinton in 1921 and played for Mexborough Town in 1922 from where he was signed by First Division Burnley in October 1923 for £450, his Football League debut coming the same month against Sheffield United. From Boxing Day 1924 he converted to a left back and spent the rest of his career in that position, being an ever present in 1927-28 and becoming Burnley’s club captain.
He won his only England cap in a 3-3 draw with Wales at The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham in February 1927, and although Burnley were relegated from the First Division in 1930, he stayed with the club and was their captain when they reached the FA Cup semi final in March 1935, losing 3-0 to eventual winners Sheffield Wednesday at Villa Park. After 5 goals in 394 appearances for The Clarets he was given a free transfer at the end of the season and Crystal Palace signed him in June 1935, however he played only three times for Palace in the autumn of 1935 before joining non league Nelson in January 1936, where he played out his career.
NB in the photograph he shakes hands with Sheffield Wednesday captain Ronnie Starling ahead of the the 1935 FA Cup semi final at Villa Park on 16th March 1935.
