Description

Cowie, Stirlingshire born inside forward David Watson began his senior career with Scottish League Falkirk in 1914 and played for Bo’Ness in 1915. He joined Sunderland in 1918 but didn’t appear for their first eleven in peacetime football before signing for Third Division (South) Portsmouth in December 1920, making his Football League debut at Reading in January 1921. Establishing himself as a first team regular from August 1922, he was an ever present, scoring 12 goals, as Portsmouth won the Third Division (South) Championship in 1923-24, and he scored a career best 13 goals in their 1926-27 campaign, which saw Pompey promoted to the First Division as Second Division runners up.

In 1929 he was part of Portsmouth’s team that reached the FA Cup Final, which they lost 2-0 to Bolton Wanderers at Wembley. But 1929-30 proved his last season with Pompey, scoring in his last game, a 4-1 home defeat to Everton in September 1929, and he re-joined Bo’Ness in the summer of 1930 after 63 goals in 296 appearances for Portsmouth.
