Dykehead, Lanarkshire born centre half Phil Watson began his football career with Lakeland A in 1925 and played for Wishaw YMCA in 1926 before signing for Scottish League Hamilton Academical in 1928. After three seasons at Douglas Park he moved south to join First Division Blackpool in the summer of 1931, making his Football League debut against Everton in February 1932. Although Blackpool were relegated in 1933, he stayed with them until December 1937, when he transferred to Barnsley after 12 goals in 178 appearances for The Seasiders, but he only made 4 appearances for The Tykes over the remainder of the 1937-38 season before returning to Scotland to join Queen of the South, with whom he finished his career.
