Carlisle, Cumberland born right back William Watson joined hometown North Eastern League club Carlisle United after the First World War in 1919, from where he signed for newly elected Third Division club Northampton Town in 1920, making his Football League debut at Queen’s Park Rangers in September 1920, immediately establishing himself as a core member of The Cobblers’ defensive line. He played nine seasons as a first team regular playing over 40 games a season for each of his first six seasons and was an ever present in their 1924-25 campaign. He never played less than 30 matches per season and was part of their teams that finished runners up in the division in 1927-28 and in third place in 1928-29, Watson scoring 6 times in 352 appearances for The Cobblers before retiring at the end of the 1928-29 season.
