Larkhall, Lanarkshire born left back Willie Watson joined local junior club Larkhall United in 1915 and was quickly signed by Scottish League club Airdrieonians in 1915, where he made 218 appearances for The Diamonds over the next six years.
Watson joined First Division club Bradford City in the summer of 1921, making his Football League debut that August at Oldham Athletic. Although City were relegated in his first season with the club, Watson retained his grip on the left back position throughout the rest of the decade, missing only one match as The Bantams won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1928-29 after suffering another relegation in 1927.
His solitary career goal came in that 1927 relegation season when his October 1926 strike against Portsmouth couldn’t prevent a 2-1 defeat. After 347 appearances he joined Walsall in the summer of 1931 and enjoyed a single season for the Fellows Park outfit, making 36 appearances, before retiring in the 1932 close season.
NB in the photograph Watson stands on the left with Bradford City team mates William Shaw and Norman Winn.
