Description

Clutton, Cheshire born centre forward Reg Weaver played junior football for Llanhilleth United in 1925 before joining Third Division (South) Newport County in 1926, making his Football League debut at Crystal Palace in February 1927, scoring in a 6-2 defeat. In November 1927, after 13 goals in 23 appearances he was sold to Major Frank Buckley’s Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he top scored in 1928-29 with 18 goals (despite not completing the season with them) before being bought by fellow Second Division club Chelsea in March 1929, having scored 29 goals in 50 appearances wearing the old gold and black.

He scored twice for Chelsea on his debut in a 4-3 defeat at Notts County, and played 11 times in the run in, scoring 4 goals, but come the new season he made only 8 more appearances, scoring a further 4 goals, losing his place in early November and playing only once more in the (by now First Division) Chelsea first team against Leicester in February 1932. In the 1932 close season he joined Bradford City, scoring on his debut at Millwall that October, but after only 3 goals in 8 appearances he joined Chesterfield in March 1933. At Saltergate he initially finished the season in the first team but played only 4 games in 1933-34 before re-joining Newport County in the 1934 close season after 2 goals in 12 appearances for The Spireites. He played one further season at Somerset Park, scoring 8 goals in 30 appearances, before joining non league Bath City in 1935, going on to play for Gloucester City in 1937 before retirement.
