Description

Birkenhead, Cheshire born outside left Walter Weaver started his football career with South Liverpool after the end of the First World War in 1918, but soon joined First Division club Burnley, for whom he made his Football League debut at Sunderland in March 1920. He broke into the first team on a regular basis from the start of the new season and scored twice in 27 League appearances as Burnley won the League Championship for the first time in their history in 1920-21. However, besides 1922-23 when he played 34 of Burnley’s matches, he was mainly a bit part player, although he played 7 cup ties, scoring 3 goals, in their 1924 run that saw Burnley reach the FA Cup semi final, where they were beaten by Aston Villa at Bramall Lane.

By the time he joined Everton in December 1924 he had scored 18 goals in 116 appearances for The Clarets over nearly six seasons at the club. At Everton he rarely got a look in and scored 3 times in 22 appearances until a transfer to Second Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in October 1926. However he retired in 1928 after only two seasons with Wolves having scored 13 goals in 47 matches for Wolves (almost certainly through injury – he was a regular in their team before never playing again after a game at Grimsby Town in December 1927).

NB in the photograph he stands on the right with Burnley team mate Benny Cross.
