Portslade, Brighton born goalkeeper Stan Webb began his football career with Portslade Gasworks in 1922 and played for Hove in 1923 and Tunbridge Wells Rangers in 1924 before signing for Third Division (South) Brighton & Hove Albion, making his Football League debut against Millwall in October 1925, playing 24 times in his debut season as Brighton finished fourth in the League. However he was relegated to the role of understudy during the next two seasons as Reg “Skilly” Williams was the principal glovesman, before returning to the team in place of Williams at the end of December 1928 to establish himself as Brighton’s undisputed number one.
He missed only one game in 1929-30 which saw Brighton again finish in fifth position, reaching the 5th round of the FA Cup where they were beaten at Newcastle United. He continued as Brighton’s principal goalkeeper until the end of the 1933-34 season, when, after 234 appearances, he re-joined non league Tunbridge Wells Rangers, later joining Southwick (in Sussex) in 1935 before his eventual retirement.
