Description
Bradford, Yorkshire born centre forward Maurice Wellock spent his early football career on the books of hometown First Division club Bradford City, and in 1916 he became the first Bradford boy to be capped for England in a schoolboy international. He played for their first team in the wartime leagues at the age of fifteen, and turned professional immediately after the First World War, but never made a senior first team appearance. Initially a defender who could play at full back, centre half or wing half, he joined Midland League Halifax Town later in 1919, and when the club joined the Third Division (North) in 1921 he made his Football League debut in their inaugural League fixture at Darlington that August, scoring 3 goals in 32 appearances during the campaign.
However he only played twice more for The Shaymen during 1922-23 before joining Second Division Blackpool in the 1923 close season. Very much on the fringes at Bloomfield Road during the next four seasons, it was at Blackpool that he first started to play at centre forward from April 1926, and he was signed by Oldham Athletic in February 1927 after 7 goals in 27 appearances.
His arrival at Oldham was greeted by a four goal debut salvo in a 5-2 win at Grimsby Town, followed by two more goals in four further appearances before the end of the season, but he opted to join newly elected Torquay United in the summer of 1927. He played in their inaugural League fixture against Exeter City that August and spent much of his only season at Plainmoor back either playing full back or wing and centre half, scoring 3 goals in 27 appearances. and he joined Southern League Peterborough & Fletton United in 1928, spending a year with them before returning to Football League action with Darlington in 1929, where he lit the blue touch paper.
Playing regularly as a centre-forward, he scored 36 goals in 38 appearances in 1929-30 as The Quakers finished third in the Third Division (North), including five in in an 8-1 win against Rotherham United in February 1931, four at both Hartlepools and Rotherham, and hat-tricks against Nelson and Carlisle. While his next two seasons proved successively less prolific, he was still the club’s top scorer each season with 23 and 18 goals, scoring a total of 77 goals in 110 appearances before re-joining Halifax Town in the 1932 close season. After 20 goals in 1932-33, he played a final season before retiring in the summer of 1934, his second spell at The Shay yielding 25 goals in 92 appearances.
