When new manager and former Rangers and Scotland international Tommy Muirhead took over as manager of St Johnstone in 1931, his first signing was defender (probably full back) James Welsh from Clydebank. “Although small of stature, he is strongly built, a sure tackler and a powerful kicker” is how Welsh was described at the time.
He made 245 appearances for The Saints between 1931 and 1939, being part of The Saints’ teams that gained promotion to the Scottish First Division in 1932 as Second Division runners up, and that subsequently performed well in Division One throughout the 1930’s, reaching the semi finals of the Scottish Cup in 1933-34 where they narrowly lost to eventual winners Rangers and managing to finish fifth in the League in 1934-35.
