Description

Anderston, Glasgow born goalkeeper Dave Whitelaw began his football career with Hill of Beath Star in 1928 and played for Cadder United in 1929 before joining Second Division Bristol City in 1930 as understudy to George Newlands, where he made his Football League debut at Reading that November, making 13 appearances for The Robins before the end of the season.

He joined Southend United in the summer of 1931, where he shared the gloves with Billy Moore over the next four seasons, making 103 appearances before a move to Gillingham in July 1935. He was an ever present for Gillingham during 1936-37, and made 125 appearances for them through to 1938.

Whitelaw guested for clubs including Bournemouth, Chester and Wrexham during the Second World War and played once for Wrexham in the 1945-46 FA Cup in a defeat to Crewe Alexandra in November 1945.
