Description

Sedgley, Staffordshire born goalkeeper Harry Wilkes began his football career playing for Sedgley Congregationals in 1925 and joined Wellington Town in 1926 before signing for First Division Derby County in early 1927, when it was said of him that “many clubs were anxious to secure the services of this clever young keeper”. Initially understudy to Ben Olney, he made his Football League debut against Arsenal towards the end of September 1927, and soon took over as the principal goalkeeper at The Baseball Ground, missing only five games as The Rams finished runners up in the League Championship in 1929-30 and only being very occasionally absent until he lost his place in the Derby County goal to Jack Kirby in December 1932, by when he had made 220 appearances for The Rams.

In the summer of 1933 he joined Sheffield United where he made 13 appearances over two seasons as understudy to Jack Smith and Roy John, before returning to non league football with Rhyl Athletic in 1935. He joined Heanor Town in 1936, his final club before his eventual retirement.
