Staveley, near Harrogate born winger Alwyne Wilks began his football career with Brodsworth Main Colliery in 1924 and signed for Third Division (North) Doncaster Rovers in May 1925, making his Football League debut more than a year later against Stockport County in September 1926, but after only 14 appearances for Doncaster, having scored 3 goals, he was signed by First Division Sunderland in February 1927, and played 10 times on the run in as Sunderland were pipped to the League Championship finishing in third place behind fierce local rivals Newcastle United.
The following season was an excellent one for Wilks, missing only two games all season, but a poor one for Sunderland who finished a disappointing 15th in the First Division, and Wilks lost his place in the first eleven from the start of the following season, making only two more appearances during 1928-29 before joining Reading in May 1929 after two goals in 55 appearances. However he failed to get into a struggling Reading side whatsoever in the early months of 1929-30 and returned north to join Barrow in October, making 8 appearances for The Cumbrians before the end of 1929 before joining  Midland League Loughborough Corinthians in 1930. He subsequently played for non league Owston Park Rangers in 1931 before finishing his playing career.
