Description

Cefn-y-Bedd, Flintshire born winger Jesse Williams began his football career with Caergwrle in 1919 and played for Oak Alyn Rovers in 1920 before joining Wrexham in 1921, for whom he made his Football League debut at Darlington in September 1923, scoring 3 times in 35 appearances in his only first team season at The Racecourse Ground. He helped Wrexham win The Welsh Cup in a replay victory over Merthyr Tydfil before being transferred to Second Division club Middlesbrough in May 1924 for £600, making his debut against South Shields that September.

After being a regular in their 1924-25 season, he was capped for Wales against Ireland in a 0-0 draw at The Racecourse Ground on 18th April 1925. However he became a fringe player at ‘Boro from the start of the 1925-26 season, and played only 4 times as Middlesbrough won the Second Division Championship in 1926-27.

He joined Second Division Clapton Orient in the summer of 1927 after 8 goals in 38 appearances for ‘Boro, but he lost his place in December 1928 during their relegation season and played only once more for The O’s before joining Welsh League club Rhyl Athletic in the summer of 1929 after 3 goals in 33 appearances for Orient.

While at Rhyl he played with his brother Frank, got to the 1930 Welsh Cup Final where the match with Cardiff City was drawn 0-0 after extra time, and represented The Welsh League against The Cheshire League. He joined Ashton National in 1930 and played for Shrewsbury Town for two seasons from 1931 before moving to Wellington Town in July 1933, and finally moved to Colwyn Bay United in 1934, where he finished his playing career after three more seasons in 1937. After his retirement he continued as a referee in the Welsh League.

His brother, Frank Williams, was capped by Wales seven times as an amateur and played for a number of teams including Wrexham, Preston North End, Altrincham and Rhyl. His youngest brother, Len Williams, also played for Bournemouth, Aldershot, Portsmouth and Charlton Athletic.
