Cambols, Northumberland born right half John “Jock” Wilson played in North East junior football for Bedlington United in 1920, and from there joined newly elected Third Division (South) club Portsmouth, making his Football League debut against Aberdare Athletic in September 1921, missing only the first two matches of their inaugural League season.
But 1922-23 didn’t go as smoothly with Wilson dropped after a heavy Christmas Day defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion, he played only once more for Pompey and was transferred to Reading in the 1923 close season after 63 appearances. He missed only one match in his first two seasons at Elm Park and in his third they won the Third Division (South) Championship in 1925-26, with Wilson only missing 4 matches.
But after playing just twice in the Second Division in 1926-27, and after 125 appearances for The Royals, he joined Northampton Town in the summer of 1927, where he spent three years as mainly a fringe player, only making 26 appearances for The Cobblers, for whom he scored his only career goal on his debut in a 5-0 win over Exeter City in September 1927, before leaving the professional game in 1930.
