Southwick, County Durham born outside left Joe Wilson began his football career with hometown club Southwick and played for Leadgate Park in 1919, from where he joined Manchester United on amateur forms in September 1920, spending much of the 1920-21 season on their books without making a first team appearance before a transfer to North Eastern League club Durham City in March 1921. The Citizens having joined the newly formed Third Division (North) over the summer of 1921, Wilson made his Football League debut against Darlington in October 1921 and played regularly for them over two seasons, scoring 8 goals in 49 appearances.
His consistency attracted Second Division club Sheffield Wednesday, who signed him in June 1923, but he only played 3 matches for The Owls over the 1923-24 season before being allowed to join Norwich City in June 1924, for whom he played two further seasons, scoring 4 goals in 41 matches, before returning to play for Southwick in 1926, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
